| "is it Furniture or is it Art" |
The day of 9/11/2001 affected every American, and I was no exception. For me, it was an epiphany that changed my life forever and for the better. It made me realize that life is short and it gave me the courage to change directions. So, after 32 years in the printing industry, I decided to do what I always wanted to do.
With the help and support of my wife and friends, I constructed a carpentry shop in my backyard, scoured the surrounding states to acquire exotic woods, and began to design and build fine furniture.
At my first show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I discovered the Spanish Colonial style of furniture and I knew, right then and there, that I had to learn how to carve wood.
The next two and a half years were spent living and learning the crafts of wood carving and furniture making at a northern New Mexico woodworking school that has been teaching these old world skills since 1909.
Every one on my creations is a solid, functional piece of furniture built to last for generations. Each one is also a very personal expression of my artistic voice.
Each one takes shape in my mind, each one is formed by my hands, and each one is painted or decorated with visual themes inspired by the beauty and spirit of the American southwest, where I live.
However, what inspires me most is the prospect that when you purchase one of my furniture pieces, you will enjoy deep pleasure and inner peace from living with it in your home, and then lovingly pass it on as a family heirloom. In a world that is increasingly dominated by technology, high production volume and disposability, I like to think of my work as a small oasis of individuality.
